Digital Standard Operating Procedures for
Business: Course Outline
Course Description
In the past, many businesses documented standard operating procedures (SOPs) by creating paper
manuals. Often, the manuals sat on shelves and became obsolete gradually as procedures changed and
the manuals weren’t updated accordingly. Today, technology has created digital process management
toolsets specifically designed to capture, provision and automate standard operating procedures. This
means that businesses can easily capture, update and provision out to staff digital SOPs that can be
accessed across teams and geographies over the internet. In this course, we teach you how successful
businesses prepare, build and manage digital standard operating procedures. Our hands-on approach
uses work-related simulations and case studies to apply tools and techniques to document, implement
and improve digital SOPs. We set up process management (Process St), project management
(Kanbanize) and digital whiteboard (Miro) software for all attendees to use for the duration of the course
to complete the in-class assignments.

management toolsets.
● In-class assignment activity: Review of toolset features, ease of use for SOP creators, ease of
use for end-users and the support offered and pricing.
Learning Outcomes:
● Students should be able to research digital SOP toolsets and present a detailed case for why one
toolset offers better value than another.
4. How organizations prepare procedures for SOP documentation. (4.5 hours)
Learning Objectives:
● An overview of how the case study organization observes and maps the current state of their
procedures in action and how they collaborate with those carrying them out.
● An insight into how the case study organization evaluates the current efficacy of the process
procedures and identifies opportunities for improvement and standardization.
● The process of how the case study organization determines which SOPs to document after
assessing the current procedures.
Learning Outcomes:
● In this module, students should have an understanding of how the case study organization
assesses the procedures they already have in place to determine the starting point for the
creation of SOPS.
5. How organizations build and revise the individual steps of their digital SOPs. (6 hours)
Learning Objectives:
● The process of how organizations map and build individual steps to create the overall digital
SOP’s.
● The difference between steps, sub-steps, tasks, sub-tasks and instructions.
● How the case study company reviews, revises and retries steps on an ongoing basis.
● In-class assignment activity: Building and mapping a set of digital SOP’s based on the assigned
case study.
Learning Outcomes:
● Students should be able to outline the framework of how organizations build their SOPs using
steps, sub-steps, tasks and sub-tasks and simple instructions in such a way that the digital SOP
is consistent and the end-user can use the SOP without confusion. Students should be able to
build a set of SOP’s based on the assigned case study and present them to the team.
